
ABOUT SORSO
Sorso is a nice small village in the North of Sardinia. It is very close to some important towns and to the most famous tourist resorts. Sorso is the best destination for who wants to visit the whole area.
The built-up area is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The beaches of white sand and high dunes, faces on the Golfo dell'Asinara, with a wonderful view on the isle-park.
The sea is characterized by beautiful depth suitable to bath, interesting for fond of diving and for surf-casting lovers, because the Golfo dell'Asinara is rich of fish.
Sorso's area has got an important archaeological heritage of the various ages.
To the Pre-nuragic and nuragic age belongs domus de janas and the Santuario di Serra Nieddha. To the Punic-roman age belongs the Complesso di Santa Filittica. At last to the medieval age belongs the Geridu archaeological site.
Even inside the built-up there are very important architectonic monuments like the San Pantaleo church,
in neoclassical style, with its big cupola (19th century); the Santa Croce church (17th century), with decorations in Catalan-gothic style; the Palazzo Baronale (17th century); the Vergine d'Itria church (17th century).
The fontana della Billèllara, an ancient fountain of 17th century, deserves to be mentioned not only for its architectonic beauty, but also because it is linked to a curious popular belief that attributes it the power to make mad who drinks its water. This way the belief explains Sorso's inhabitants moody temperament.
Another religious building, the Cappuccini church (15th century), has a traditional history to date back to 1208, when the Holy Virgin, known as Noli me tollere (don't touch me) appeared to a dumb man giving him the gift of speech. Since then, every year, the month of May is consecrated to the Madonna of Noli me tollere feast and it is considered one of the most important religious recurrence for Sorso's inhabitants.
With the celebrations in May, the numerous folk and cultural shows start with festivals, comedies, outdoor films, bands' and traditional cantadores'(Sardinian singers) performances.
During the festivals you can appreciate the typical food (snails, aubergines and broad beans, all dressed with excellent olive oil), taste the famous and of good quality wines (Cannonau, Vermentino and Moscato) and the typical bread and sweets of Sorso, all adorned with embellishments and baked in the traditional ovens supplied with wood.
